On the 21st,

the Tuchun of the Yangtse provinces telegraphed their

approval of Tuan thi Jui provided that Feng was eliminated

from politics. It is reported that even Wu himself

has now approved of Tuan.

On 16th November, "Hollyhook" relieved the

"Foxglove" at Tientsin. As the situation at Chin wang tao

had become quiet, I, with the agreement of the Minister,

withdraw my staff officer and submarine L.7 from there,

Subsequently Submarines L.7 and L. 33 sailed from

Weihaiwel to Hongkong.

I proceeded in the "Hawkina" on the 19th

November from Hongkong to Taku Bar, from whence I

shifted my flag to the "Marasion" and went up to Tientsin

and thence to Peking to pay an unofficial visit to

the Minister, and to become cognisant with the British

policy and affairs generally. On arrival of "Hawking"

at Taku Bar, "Durban" returned to Weihaiwei where the

"Carlisle" from Shanghai had also proceeded, the distriot

there being quiet and orderly.

8. I rehoiated my flag in the "Hawkins" on 29th

Hovember and proceeded to Neihaiwai. As the Minister

and the Consul-General, Tientsin, considered the

situation in the North sufficiently stable, "Hollyhook"

was ordered to return to Weihaiwei; she was, however,

kept at Taru Bar for several days on account of a breakdown

in the steering gear. The "Hawking” marines rejoined

their ship from the "Hollyhook" and "Durban", the "Diomede's"

marines were sent down to rejoin their ship in the

"AMBROSK" on the 27th November.
